Julian's fascination with petroglyphs began on a camping trip to Red Rock Canyon, Nevada, where he came across rock art likely created by the Southern Paiute or Anasazi. Seeing these images stained into stone became a lasting impression, and he began working petroglyphs into his paintings.

Now, his recent work pushes that further, moving in a classic Western direction that contrasts realist figures with abstracted petroglyph forms. Rather than treating the glyphs as literal parts of the landscape, he places them in the background as spiritual totems— making the figures feel inseparable from the land itself.
